there have been in this country to a sense columbine. >> and the nra facebook page has gone dark. we will speak with lisa graves about big guns and big money. all of that and more coming up. this is "democracy now!," democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman. residents of newtown, connecticut, have begun holding the first of many kernels for the 27 victims killed in friday's shooting rampage at sandy hook elementary school. on monday, noah pozner and jack pinto, 06 years old, were laid to rest in small caskets. more funerals are slated today including two more 6-year-old victim's, james mattioli and jessica rekos. at the white house, president obama convened a meeting with top officials to discuss ways to respond to the newtown massacre, including potential proposals for gun control. pressed for details, white house press secretary jay carney reduced offer any specifics on how obama plans to address the nation's gun violence. >> is a complex problem that will require a complex solution. no single piece of legislation, no single action will fully address the problem.

defiant restriction in the wake of the newtown, connecticut, shootings. instead, the nra is calling forearmed security guards at every school, every school in the country. cnn's tom foreman is joining us now. you were at that speech that wayne lap ichlt erre gave announcing the reaction of what happened a week ago today. tell our viewers how it went. >> well, as you know, they kept a very low profile but today they came out to say they had some things to say and they sure did. despite protesters, the president and public opinion increasingly pushing against the gun lobby, the national rifle association sent a sharp message to wayne la pierre. no retreat. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >> in a wide-ranging statement, lapierre condemned the shootings in connecticut and other places but accused congress of relying on armed guards in congress while calling other actions inappropriate elsewhere. >

to keep the pressure on because the other side doesn't stop. the nra and its nuts who oppose -- look of course we are all for the second amendment. we have gone way beyond the second amendment. this is ridiculous. i used to hunt with my uncle, with my dad. i have a 20-gauge double-gauge shotgun or whatever it was when i was probably 13, the biggest thing in my love. i loved it loved my gun. but the idea of these semi oughtics, people need this, this is ridiculous. it's not like automatic rifles it's wrong and we haven't talked about it enough. we have to talk about it enough. here are some of the numbers that i saw again over the weekend. since 1982, 61 mass murders in this country with firearms. 61. eleven of them in schools. nineteen in the workplace. 3 one in military basis. on black friday, this year 154,000 guns were sold. 2 million guns sold in the month of month of november alone. there are 400 gun shops within the four counties of connecticut where newtown is located. and there are more gun sellers in this country today than there are mcdonald's.

in joe and the other top aides in white house and said, we have to act within ten days before the nra gets organized. and they failed to do it. they tried and they failed. and lbj had a bill that had been bottled up in committee for months and months for, you know, licensing and registration and they signed something much, much less in october and he spoke out, president johnson did, in october of 1968, forcefully and angrily about the failure even after robert kennedy's death to do something to defeat the gun lobby. while i have the spirit of the season and a feeling that things have changed and saw joe's powerful -- joe, your powerful statement in the aftermath, in the immediate aftermath of the killings, i have my doubts as to whether this president and this congress have the guts and the strength and the political courage to go forward. >> they have to move quickly, don't they, john heilemann? >> yeah, i think they do. you can't lose them. the sense of moral urgency that comes with proximity to this thing. and right now the nra is on its heels defenders of our insanely permissive

the power on the congress and senate. you have the power of the nra but on the ground so many millions of people are advocating for gun control. so i think at this point, you need to -- when you think about the strategic coalitions that make people power recognize that the nra's not omnipotent, it may behave like god, but actually, it's not. also what we need in schools, more detectives in schools in new york, in urban areas, that's exactly what you have. and what you have is criminalization of young people. particularly people of color. when you think of a piece like mother jones that takes you over 60 years, most of the guns are illegal. >> that's clearly what we have in this case. >> that's what we have, the guns were legal. so what we never want to do is go to where the power and profit sits. so what we do, we talk about we need this for children. and we need to deal -- we need to criminalize the mental health which is what we will do, but what we don't do is treat the issue. >> also, we have a security mind-set, understandably, right? exactly. the impulse of apocalypse for securit

the south, from kentucky, has always been critical of the nra, long before he became a member of congress. he is he has an f rating from the nra. as he told us yesterday and more and more people recognize this. one of the reasons you see so many republicans and democrats, they may not be willing to stand up to grover norquist but they are willing to stand up to the nra and the reason they are is because they recognize two things about the nra now, which hadn't really come to light before. number 1 is, it's no longer what we used to thing of it as just a nice grass roots organization where people who like to go hunting with their kids, you know, maybe collect some guns. just law-abiding gun owners johnny six-shooter representing them. no. no. the nra is a big gun manufacturer's lobby. they have become really the front for the gun manufacturers of the country, those who are manufacturing the guns that are killing our kids. there is a recent study out that showed since 2005, the nra got $53 million from its corporate partners 74% of those corporate partners either

's this myth that the nra is this organization that decides who wins and who loses. first what's the difference if you lose. how you can look in a mirror and say to get my campaign going or to win an election i was willing to let more kidsetille i mean somehow or another we have this all mixed up here. we keep talking about is it good or bad for campaigns, is it good or bad politics. i come from a world where if i said that to the press i would just get massacred, what's right. and we have an obligation to help these kids stay alive. and adults as well. and the nra, their number one, to show you how powerless they really are, their number one objection -- objective in this last election was to defeat barack obama for a secretary term. last time i checked, he won. and he won reonably comforbly. i went in, we created a small pact. we put some money in-- a small pac. we put some money into some campaigns for congress, i think five campaigns where the nra supported the other side. we won four of them. and the nra has created this myth that you can't fight them. >> rose: so one objective is to destr

today, we will have live coverage here on the cspan accords. while we wait for the nra to get under way, we spoke earlier with a republican member of congress to get his thoughts on last night's action and the house on fiscal cliff legislation. > >> what happened inside the caucus last night at 7:30. >> it was about the short as one i have ever seen. john boehner said he did not have the vote and we passed the bill, two bills that harry reid has been sitting on and the senate. he said he is available to negotiate. mr. kantor said we would be called back within 48 hours notice and see you after christmas. that's all it was. host: are they negotiate from a position of strength? guest: the speaker has been negotiating as much as he can -- i think the president has not been dealing in good and faith and not negotiating at all. he gave us a plan that was his budget that was voted on in the senate, 99-0 against his budget and in the house, he gets zero votes for it also. that is what the president put on the table. i don't think he has been negotiating in good faith. we need to find solutions

of its first steps toward tougher gun laws and it comes as the nra is speaking out for the first time since the tragedy. dan lothian at the white house this morning. let's start with the white house before we get to what the nra is saying. what's the latest there? >> good morning, the latest development is later this morning, the president will announce he's tapping vice president biden to head up an interagency effort to try and come up with policies in order to address gun violence. the president will be making announcement in the white house briefing room. he will be joined by vice president biden. we are told by white house aides that this will be more about the process, rather than laying out any policies, but nonetheless this comes one day after the white house started getting a bit more specific about what the president would support. such as senator feinstein's effort to reinstate that ban on assault weapons. also measures that would address the issue of mental health. all of this coming as the white house has been getting a lot more pressure to come up with some action points
